I looked, and looked, and looked, and couldn’t see the notices. Then it hit me: the banner ads!
I ran into the same thing as Jonathan: I couldn’t find the notifications off-the-bat.
I wonder if the notices are more visible when in a full browser.
This would be really interesting to conduct a few usability tests on.
Well, a few more tests, really. I think we could consider your views of it as five second tests.
That’s what I suspected as well.
Yeah i think such ribbon type notices are most effective if they animate into view e.g. they might drop down from the top of the browser when the page loads – that way the eye is drawn to them. Otherwise things right near the top of the browser are frequently overlooked.
I’m the web services librarian at VPL, and I want to thank all of you for your feedback on our banner alerts. We’ve not had the opportunity to test these with the public, but these ‘five second tests’ are very useful.
