I worked on the presentation over a month-long period, all the while thinking, “I’m not sure why I’m putting this together. I don’t think it’s going to go anywhere.” However, just days before I gave my presentation Google announced they’d be sending out 100,000 QR Code stickers to businesses (like restaurants) to affix to their front entrances. Now I’m thinking, “This might actually go somewhere…” In order to become popular we need more corporate interest (like Google) or we need cell phone providers to have the QR code reading software uploaded at the point of sale (which they do in Japan).

I’m with your 100% on those questions. In short, my answers are:

1. No.
2. Maybe?
3. Not sure.

I bet we’re in the same place thinking about QR. Good to know about, worth having in the arsenal in case they should take off/solve a problem, but nothing urgent at this point.

The only effective uses I can think of straightaway are appealing to supergeeks and as part of some sort of library ARG. Then again, it doesn’t take much to include a QR code on promo materials (etc) just in case it makes a few people smile…

1. Do enough people understand what they are?
2. Do those people have the proper equipment to take advantage of them?
3. What then?

I’d love to brainstorm ideas with other interested librarians/service designers.
